The concept of "Holy War" is by definition, the Sixth Pillar of Islam. The alleged prophet Muhammed revealed that Allah required all Muslims to engage in activities that would return the lands of Dar al Harb (lands of war) to Allah. Muhammed prophesied that when all the world became Dar al Islam, there could be peace. In pursuit of this goal, over the 14oo years that Islam has exsisted; jihadists have killed 270 million non-believers. This figure does not include the Muslims who have been killed as the result of sectarian violence or genocide perpetrated by their own Islamic governments.
The United States has been embroiled in this since the Revolutionary War ended. As our Merchant ships were no longer protected by England, the Barbary pirates seized them; stealing the ships and their cargo and enslaving the crews. It was the need to protect trade that brought our forefathers together to change the first Continental Congress into a Constitutional Government with the right to collect taxes and the right to commission the building of a Navy.
The only way to end this struggle is either for Western Cultures to decide that what we have is not worth fighting for and simply give up; or for Islam to declare that its Sixth Pillar has no place in the modern world. Anything inbetween would just be a "hudna;" a treaty to be broken at Islam's whim.

Jihad simply means an act that a muslim performs where the outcome is of some benefit to the actor. Can jihad be violent?
