It seems Hu has become impatient with Deng's cautious approach. The Chinese regime wants to use its new capabilities and exert its power. This was evident all summer and into the fall as Beijing took a hard line on both economic and security issues, alarming not only the U.S. but countries all across Asia. And last week, it threw the unveiling of its new J-20 stealth jet in the face of visiting Defense Secretary Robert Gates, an event its state-run media has played up in the days since.
A Jan. 12 news story in The People's Daily stated, "Although it will be some years before the J-20 enters service, it is a potential rival to the US F-22 Raptor, the only stealth fighter currently operating.....The J-20's entry into the test flight stage seems to indicate China is progressing faster than expected with the new technology." Secretary Gates capped production of the F-22 at a mere 187 aircraft on the grounds that no foreign fighter of similar capability would emerge for at least a decade.
